Brilliant write up, could not have said it better myself. I am on Twitter solely because it continues to be the best place for live sports community. With what you have laid out, and from my own observations, I wonder if by the end of 2024 "sports Twitter" as an ecosystem may not eventually find itself on another platform such as Threads. Personally, I would love for it to happen. I can only block so many accounts and mute so many words to make the place palatable.

Thank you Preston. I can't see it going on like this much longer while organisations in sport are trying to present themselves as value-driven. Threads seems to be gaining traction but slowly...

It certainly is. That’s my best bet for sport moving forward. It provides something other applications don’t which is the opportunity to talk about anything and everything across sports without it being tailored to a specific sport. That’s the beauty of Twitter (or was) and it really shows in the Olympics. I see some of the sporting accounts I follow popping up more on threads, but it’s not the live conversation we have on Twitter just yet.

I’m guessing as it becomes more of a cesspool and Elon continues his overtures to the worst human beings and does nothing to protect users, bigger sporting brands will not only pull their resources from the site, but their main presence as well. You’d know better than me, but while the NFL may be all in on Twitter (no surprises) it’ll be interesting to see if sporting entities like individual clubs or perhaps an entire league like F1, English Championship, MLB, etc., says enough is enough. That’s when we may see a true shift in fans and supporters looking elsewhere as well. Seems like many of them are testing the waters right now.

A really good piece — well-argued. Personally I’ve had enough of Twitter and am leaving this week: this solidified my decision. Thanks Amar!

Thanks Paddy. I'm hearing this from a lot of people. Let's see if it makes a difference at all.

I closed and deleted my account the second the Musk takeover happened and I haven't missed it one bit. Threads is perfectly good enough.

You did the right thing, Colby. Threads seemed to take off slowly but enjoying it now.

Fantastic piece! I've stayed away from Twitter for so long because of all the things you've mentioned. Every time I hop on it to catch some F1 news, my mental health gets destroyed. So now, I just get it from other sources instead.
